Default Re: Adding hyphenation exceptions on InDesign

Firstly, go to Edit > Preferences > Dictionary.
In Hyphenation Exceptions set User Dictionary and Document option.

Then go to Edit > Spelling > Dictionary.
Here you will add all the words not available in original ID dictionary. Or add a word already in dictionary but with a different hyphenation.

The easiest way to add words is just do a spell check, although you can also type each word directly in Dictionary window.

When ID finds an unknown word, click "Dictionary" (not "Add"). In the new window, click Hyphenate. Something like this will be shown:
bes~~ti~~nha

The ~ marks hyphenation points.
~ is a weak, not preferred but possible separation.
~~ is normal hyphenation points.
~~~ is preferred, almost mandatory point.
Example:
up-to-date must be separeted in the hyphens. da-te is a bad point cause it shows three consecutive hyphens. So ID will offer:
up-~~~to-~~~da~te
ID offers correct hyphenation points in almost all cases, even in Portuguese. Of course, sometimes incorrect hyphenation are shown. So, you must edit the ~s and then add the word.
After that, just click Add. The word is included in your personal dcitionary for that language.
Se você é brasileiro, vai gostar de saber que o ID leva em consideração as recomendações gramaticais da ABL. Por exemplo, quando a primeira sílaba é uma vogal ou quando a fração da palavra forma outra considerada chula:
abacate = aba~~ca~~te (e não a~~ba...)
curiosidade = curio~~si~~da~~de (e não cu~~rio...)
Porém, é comum que o ID não identifique hiatos. Mas daí é só corrigir.
Hope this helps/Espero ter ajudado.
