It is the operating System. If you order a new MAC it will have Tiger 10.4 as it is the current latest offered.

And if you wait until October, your new Mac will come with Leopard (10.5)plus lots of other programs including Bootcamp which will allow you to run all your windoze programs - not that you will really need to.

You can also buy a mac without any operating system. but it wont even run at all.

Just FYI, the code names for the Macintosh operating systems were: Cheetah (10.0), Puma (10.1), Jaguar (10.2), Panther (10.3), Tiger (10.4), Leopard (10.5).

Make sure you update to 10.5.2 - that update makes a big differnce
